Homemade BBQ Sauce

This is a quick and easy homemade BBQ sauce, made with ingredients that I’m sure you already have in your pantry. It’s is great served simply along side a steak but also makes a great basting sauce for ribs or chicken on your BBQ. We have been making it on and off for 25 years or more, it’s adapted from one found in Keith Floyds “Floyd’s American Pie” recipe book and TV series with the same name from 1989. It does make a lot of sauce but it lasts well in the fridge but also freezes well as well.

Ingredients

  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • 50gm butter
  • 3 tsp sugar
  • 2 tsp mustard powder
  • 2 tsp chilli powder (less if you don’t like spice)
  • 250ml tomato sauce
  • 120ml vinegar
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

Directions

In a large frypan or skillet, over low heat, melt the butter and add the onion and garlic. Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, over low heat, you want to cook them gently until completely soft and translucent.

Combine all the other ingredients in a large jug with 120ml of water, then add to the pan.

Increase the heat to medium, bring to the boil and simmer for 5 minutes or until the sauce thickens. It will continue to thicken on cooling.

Store in a jar in the fridge.

Even if you, like my son Jack, don’t eat meat this is a winner in veggie burgers instead of tomato sauce. Actually anywhere you use a tomato relish this would be a great substitute. As always if you do make this recipe please let me know how you got on in the comments and also feel free to ask me any questions you have about the recipes. Enjoy. Sheryl x
